Musings: The 24.com blogs revamp

by on February 25, 2009 at 3:14 am

Here are some designs and thoughts around the new look 24.com blog platform. The designs are by Philip Langley, with Alistair Fairweather in the driving seat.

Our musings:
1. Less 24.com, more individual blogger. More blog-like 🙂
2. More viral, using contact and social network mining. Help bloggers build audience.
3. Rigid templates for best practice, yet open to […]

SA political party launches impressive, Obama-esque campaign site

by on February 20, 2009 at 1:53 am

The Democratic Alliance (DA), a local opposition party, has impressed with their new online strategy. Clearly inspired by Barack Obama’s web innovation, the political party has launched two websites, although only just squeaking in two months before national elections kick off. The sites are: a social media-type campaigning site, “Contribute to change“, (built on BuddyPress […]

The social network approach to viralising your articles

by on February 19, 2009 at 2:55 am

One of the key viral elements of content websites, such as news sites, are the “email to a friend” links you see on many articles. Personally, I don’t use these, but I know they’re valuable: there’s a type of user that religiously use these links as a way of sharing. Obviously they introduce new traffic […]

Times election site

by on February 17, 2009 at 4:43 am

The local Times launched their elections play today. It’s pretty basic (although I’m lead to believe this is just phase I), but here’s what I think is really clever and innovative about it:
1. They’ve launched it on a completely new domain called “SA elections“. That says, “we own election coverage”, not to mention the fabulous […]

The Top 100: Traditional media losing out to people power

by on February 11, 2009 at 3:12 am

Here is a list of the top 100 sites from Alexa. Today, I count three traditional media sites (BBC, CNN and NY Times — just squeaking in at number 100). The web of five years ago would have shown a different picture all together. It begs the question: Will there be any traditional media sites […]

“SA companies beat internet giant to the pinch”

by on February 10, 2009 at 12:49 am

Um, received this rather surreal press release yesterday. Not sure I would have sent this out as a piece of public relations, myself. It’s likely that Google will respond, either with a polite phonecall or a legal letter. Or in all likelihood, they just won’t care. Be interesting to see how it plays out.
After chatting […]

Blogging about tweeting about podcasting about blogging

by on February 8, 2009 at 2:05 pm

This made me chuckle. And by blogging it I’m acutely aware of the infinite irony loop I’ve created. It follows a similar meme theme raised recently, criticising the incessant over-analysis and navel-gazing in the “social media marketing” “sector”. (Intended separation of double quotes).

Why Microsoft will eventually win on the web

by on February 3, 2009 at 2:36 pm

I’m no Microsoft fan boy. In fact I don’t think there is anything like a “fan boy” when it comes to Microsoft products. I’m a recent iPhone convert and I curse the years I’ve had to put up with the clunky and often-buggy Windows for Mobile and PC.
It’s no secret that Microsoft is a poor […]

A report from the 80s. Really funny.

Mobile, social media & what’s next

by on January 26, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Here are some answers to questions in a recent Moneyweb interview Mandy De Waal did with me a while back.
1. What role does social media play in 24.com’s strategy?
Social media plays a key role in 24.com’s strategic thinking. Internationally, it’s the social media sites like You Tube and Facebook that are dominating the web rankings […]
